Explore the Great Dismal Swamp Canal by canoe or kayak in the 4th Annual Paddle for the Border challenge. This historic canal is adjacent to the Great Dismal Swamp--'a unique and mysterious place'--chartered by George Washington's survey company in 1763. Paddle participants push off in South Mills, North Carolina and land 7.5 miles upstream in Chesapeake, Virginia, for a picnic lunch. Last year, Paddlers traveled to the event from 15 cities in Virginia, 20 cities in North Carolina, Maryland, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Washington D. C., and West Virginia. Important Information: This first-come, first-served event is limited to 200 canoes and kayaks, so register well before the April 15 deadline. Those who prefer dry land can walk, jog, horseback ride (bring your own horse!), or bike along the 11-mile Dismal Swamp Canal Trail.
